As a small business owner, you know that standing out in a crowded marketplace can be challenging. One of the most effective ways to differentiate your business is by bringing your own personality to work and aligning your values with those of your company. I recently came across an inspiring example that perfectly illustrates this concept, and I just had to share it.

A Story of Impact Through Authenticity

My sister recently hired a cleaning service for her house, and the reason she chose this particular service truly blew me away. She heard about the service through a referral who shared their first-time experience with the company. Feeling apprehensive about having someone in their home, the referral was pleasantly surprised when they returned to find their children’s well-loved teddies tucked into bed, waiting for their beloved family to come home. How adorable is that?

This small, thoughtful gesture made a significant difference in how the customer felt about having someone in their home. It created a positive impression of both the company and the person doing the cleaning. Can you imagine the reaction of those children? To top it off, it’s customary for this cleaning service to leave a fresh batch of homemade cookies on the kitchen counter. Wow!  I wish this cleaning service was in my community!

Creating Differentiators

I am so impressed with the owner of this cleaning service. She has created numerous differentiators for her company by hiring the right kind of people and fostering a culture of high customer satisfaction and employee commitment. This cleaning company stands out because it goes beyond the basics and makes a meaningful impact on its customers’ lives.

Applying This Concept to Your Business

As a small business owner, think about what sets you apart from others. It’s a tough question, but it’s essential for thinking about what makes your business unique. If you’re unsure of your differentiators, take some time to reflect and let them shine brightly through your business.

Discovering Your Business Differentiators

The differentiators of a business are typically those of the owner or those in upper management positions.  When discovering what sets your business apart, think of it from your personal perspective.  Your differentiators are typically what people know you for and why they love you. To help you identify them, consider the following questions:

  1. List your top five values.
  2. What is your personal vision?
  3. In twenty-five words or less, write your personal purpose/mission. What do you want to be known for.
  4. List five goals you have currently (Now Vision).

By answering these questions, you can gain clarity on your unique strengths and qualities. Use this insight to infuse your business with your personality and values, creating a distinct and memorable experience for your customers.

Standing out in the business world doesn’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s the small, authentic actions that make the biggest impact. By aligning your business with your personal values and bringing your unique personality to the forefront, you can create meaningful differentiators that resonate with your customers and set your business apart. So, take a moment to reflect on what makes you unique, and let that shine through in everything you do. Your customers—and your business—will thank you.
